We came to the studio not totally sure what we were gonna record.
No one knew what songs we were gonna play
No rehearsal
But we brought a ton of instruments!
2 electric vibraphones, a 5 octave marimba, timpani, drum machines, trombone, saxophone, a healthy selection of my hand built instruments I call "Wollesonics" and a beautiful Lithuanian kanklės.
Will noticed that this was the first time we had 2 electric vibraphones in the same room and we vaguely discussed that perhaps we could make a more electric-y kind of album
Turns out everyone brought some tunes to the session
Dalius brought 2 tunes that I call "classics".
His tunes seem not to adhere to any style or conventions or rules.
I don't know how he writes his tunes
I suspect he simply walks down the street singing a melody then pulls out his phone and records it immediately and then goes home and meticulously writes every note on a piece of paper.
But where do those melodies come from? Much of what Dalius does is a mystery. Like his drumming - It seems it shouldn't work but it works in the most wonderful surprising way! Jonas Mekas once said of Dalius that he is not normal. I agree completely! He's extraordinary!
I brought in "Heart in Hand" which I wrote for a puppet version of Shakespeare's Tempest called "Tiny Tempest" created by legendary Sara Peetie.
It was written for the scene where Miranda & Ferdinand express their love for each other.
Will brought in the rest of the songs. He is a fantastic composer and has written music for movies & TV and for his own band TMBOY. His songs are incredibly crafted and fit together so beautifully that they always find that sweet spot between heavy and light. His songs float!
Will also brought in some drum loops and sequences which was new and exciting.
so when we were finally all set up...
all plugged in....
We realized that we were in the magical Figure 8 Studios!
Our spirit guide, the amazing Phil Weinrobe was at the console!
All of sudden...
We knew exactly what to do!
